The coach behind Chu Court Academy.
2004 ITA All-American · 30+ years on court
Some coaches find their way to the court. Coach Cheryl was born to it. Growing up with a semiprofessional soccer player turned tennis enthusiast as her father — Coach Al, the person she proudly calls “Coach Dad” — she spent countless hours rain or shine on the tennis courts, competing in USTA junior tournaments, and learning that tennis was never just a sport. It was a way of building character, resilience, and an unshakeable love of movement.
Coach Dad is more than just a dad — and more than just a coach to me. Everything I bring to the court and to others today started with him. He taught me the importance of family bonding, helping others, and the positive impact sports can have on your wellbeing for a lifetime.
That foundation set the stage for one of the most remarkable chapters of Coach Cheryl's athletic career. While completing her studies at UC Berkeley, she simultaneously competed on the Cal Club Tennis Team — which claimed its first Sectional Championship title in 2004 — while also competing on Chabot College's women's tennis team, where she earned the prestigious 2004 ITA All-American designation, one of the sport's highest collegiate honors. Two teams. One unforgettable year.
Today, Coach Cheryl brings 30+ years as a competitive athlete and nearly two decades in health, wellness, and instructional design together in a coaching practice built on that same family spirit. Whether she's working with a first-time pickleball player or a young tennis student ready to compete, her approach is equal parts technical precision and genuine encouragement.
Family Court bonus: Coach Cheryl's daughter (10) and son (8) often assist at family and youth lessons, bringing an extra spark of inspiration to young athletes.

How we coach
Every lesson at Chu Court Academy is grounded in safety, smart mechanics, and a whole lot of fun. Drawing on her background in ergonomics, injury prevention, and instructional design, Coach Cheryl structures sessions that build proper technique from the ground up — with warm-up, skill work, and cool-down built in as non-negotiables.
For younger students, expect games, positive reinforcement, and the kind of patient, high-five-heavy energy that makes kids ask to come back next week. For adult players new to pickleball or returning to tennis, expect honesty, encouragement, and a coach who genuinely celebrates your progress.
